Cover Letter

Dear Professor,

For my first term, in my first year of college, I was required to take the course Basic Communication and Study Skills (ENGLCOM). I have set my goals for each component, as I have aforementioned. Truly, I can say that I have attained my goals on some level.

There are several things I learned throughout this term, in this course. Mainly, I have improved my writing skills, especially in academic writing, which is one of the goals I have set for this course. I am more conscious of my grammar and my usage of words. Also, I’ve never had to write an outline for an essay before. I learned how to make an outline for essays. At first, I find the idea of writing for a specific purpose quite challenging. I was used to writing whatever came to mind. Having an outline to follow, to help in organizing my ideas, made academic writing less challenging.  I now appreciate the use of outlines in writing.

It may not be evident to others, but it is to me – my vocabulary has improved. My choice of words changed. I rarely use slang for writing now. I rarely use it before too, but I use it less now. However, I keep in mind that the choice of words is not as prioritized in writing. Yes, one may use highfaluting words, but will the readers know the meaning of the word? More importantly, does the writer know the meaning of the word? Our words will help convey our messages to our readers. If the readers do not understand the words, how then do we expect them to understand the message? Sometimes, it is still better to go back to basic. It is still better to use simple terms. It is easier for the readers and for the writer as well.

Yes, there are more things to learn in the field of communication and writing. There are more lessons to learn and skills to acquire. I will get there. I must keep on improving. I may be in the field of business; some people may say that writing is not very important in the corporate world. Well, I beg to differ. How will we even have business transactions with local and international people if we are not effective communicators? How will we convince investors? How will we do our proposals? Communication skills are important in not only in the corporate world, but also in everyday life. It is not just a requirement in school. It is actually necessary in our everyday lives. Having impressive skills in communication will go a long way.

Respectfully yours,
Student
